Beaumont Hospital
Epilepsy is a neurological condition which is treated by consultant neurologists who specialise in epilepsy and their teams. Beaumont is one of the referring hospitals under the National Clinical Programme for Epilepsy.
In some cases a person with seizures may be referred to our 4 bedded specialist epilepsy monitoring unit that facilitates 24 hour monitoring of individuals for epilepsy and seizure activity. These diagnostic assessments will give your medical teams more detailed information about your seizures and inform your treatment plan.
The EMU service is supported by Epilepsy Specialist Nurses who are Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) or Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) experienced in epilepsy care and support.

This study involves a prolonged EEG recording, as an inpatient in our EMU. Video EEG will help identify the area of your brain where the seizure starts by recording your brains electrical activity. In order to record seizures, your doctors may need to reduce your anti- epileptic medication and/or sleep-deprive you.
You may be required to have an MRI or a CT scan. These tests look at the structural anatomy of the brain. Doctors look at these images in conjunction with EEG to determine the area in your brain where the seizures originate. Your doctor may request other specialised scans to help plan your treatment
Neuropsychological Evaluation is carried out by doctors who specialise in testing and interpreting your brains functions. They will evaluate special skills such as memory, language and speech.
See Clinical Neurospsychology for more information.
