Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. This type of scan does not use radiation. 

If contrast dye is needed for your MRI, an IV cannula will be placed in your arm to inject the dye which helps highlight specific areas. 

Please contact the MRI department before your appointment if you currently have or have had any of the following:

• History of allergic reaction to MRI dye
• Pacemaker
• Artificial heart valve
• Any heart or brain surgery
• Any implants, for example; metal implants, electronic implants, and magnetic implants.
• Worked with metal and may have metal fragments inside the body. 

How to get an appointment for a MRI scan?

• GP patient: A GP cannot refer a patient directly for an MRI scan. This scan will only be performed for a GP where it has been recommended as follow-up in a radiology report on a GP referred x-ray or ultrasound.
• Outpatient: If you have attended a consultant appointment in Beaumont and they have requested an MRI for you an appointment letter will be sent in the post to your address. 

Where will my MRI be done? 

MRIs are performed in 2 locations:

• Radiology department, lower ground floor of Beaumont Hospital
• MRI department, St Joseph’s Hospital campus, Raheny. Your appointment letter will clearly state the location of your MRI. 

How do I get my results? 

Your results will be sent to the doctor that referred you for the scan. If your GP did not send you for the scan then they will not automatically receive the results. Results are not sent to your home address. 

If a Consultant in the hospital referred you, you will need to phone the secretary to make an appointment to see the team to discuss your results or request a call back from one of the doctors on the team.
